Activities

Recreation and activities are key component of the day habilitation program offered at Village Learning & Achievement Center. Villagers enjoy the variety and activities offered, which makes every day a new and exciting day.

Bowling

Villagers are getting lots of bowling practice thanks to their weekly trips to the bowling alley. They are split into four separate bowling groups, and they can be found at the bowling alley every Monday – Thursday. Bowling is a wonderful activity because it encourages social interaction, in addition to sharpening math, language, and self-help skills.

Dance Lessons

Village Learning & Achievement Center, in conjunction with Quest High School and Stacey’s Dance Studio, is offering regular dance lessons to Villagers. Stacey’s Dance Studio has graciously allowed us to utilize their facilities, and members of the Quest High School Dance Team are committed to teaching lessons twice a month. The Villagers have really enjoyed the music, learning new moves and interacting with the dance team.

Sports

Villagers enjoy getting outside and participating in a variety of sports with students from Kingwood Park High School every Thursday. A group of students from the high school come to Village Learning & Achievement Center to play sports with the Villagers during their PE period. They typically lead activities such as kick ball, basketball, soccer, baseball or flag football. This is a wonderful program because it encourages the Villagers to exercise, helps sharpen their social skills and gives them an opportunity to interact with energetic high school students.

Movies

Villagers look forward to their monthly visits to the movie theatre. They spend time researching newly released movies on the internet and in the newspapers, and they have an opportunity to voice their opinions by voting on the movie that the group will attend.

Plays

Villagers have an opportunity to attend a play at the Main Street Theatre in Houston every six weeks. A couple of plays that they have seen and enjoyed in the past include The Diary of Ann Frank and James and the Giant Peach. Additionally, Villagers attend plays when featured at The Nathaniel Center and Kingwood College.

Special Olympics

Several Villagers exhibit their athletic abilities by participating in Special Olympic activities. Some of the events that they excel in include horseback riding, cycling, bocce ball, golf, swimming, basketball, tennis, table tennis and bowling. Practice is seasonal, depending on the sport.

Anders VanBrackle, who attends Village Learning & Achievement Center’s Day Program, had the opportunity to compete in the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer games in Shanghai, the People’s Republic of China. Anders was one of 60 Special Olympic Texas athletes that were in attendance, and he did a wonderful job competing in the tennis events.
