Volunteer

Village Learning & Achievement Center is indebted to the countless volunteers who assist us throughout the year!  We appreciate the support our volunteers provide and we think they may gain as much from their experiences with our Villagers as the Villagers gain from their selfless giving of their time and talent.  We welcome all individuals and organizations to join us in our efforts to make a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities.  We encourage you to review the volunteer “job descriptions” and contact us if you are interested in helping!  Please note a required application process must be completed for our on-site volunteers.

Classroom helpers work in one of our classrooms assisting with a variety of tasks which may include reading, math, hand-over-hand learning, and playing bingo and other games.  We also need volunteers to accompany our Villagers on outings as an extra pair of eyes and ears!   Volunteers are also needed to help with set up and clean up of our cooking classes.  All Classroom Helpers are supervised and supported by a staff member and are not expected to independently teach the class.  We enjoy people from the community spending time in the classrooms because it makes the circle of friends the Villagers have that much bigger and more meaningful!  Village at Plum Valley is open Monday through Friday from 6:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  and we welcome volunteers at any time during the day.

Organic Gardener

How does our garden grow?  With help from our volunteers!  The Village Garden, an organic garden located on the grounds of Village at Stoney Glen, is a great place to spend time with our Villagers helping them to learn new skills.  If you’re not afraid to dig in and get a little dirty, we could sure use your help!  In addition to seasonal planting and routine maintenance of the garden, we also need help planting seeds to grow “starter plants” in our greenhouse.  Produce harvested from The Village Garden is used in preparing meals for the residents of Village at Stoney Glen.  Staff and volunteers also sell herbs and vegetables at the weekly farmers market in Humble which is hosted by the Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce.   (For more information, call 281-446-2128 or click here.)  Each week, several local restaurants also purchase herbs from our organic garden.

Stoney Glen

Our residents and staff at Village at Stoney Glen look forward to volunteers coming in on Saturdays and Sundays!  Lots of opportunities are available to spend some quality time with our Villagers, including watching the “big game” on T.V., playing billiards, board games and card games, and taking a turn on the Nintendo Wii.  Perhaps you would you enjoy creating a “girls only” afternoon or evening to spend some time painting fingernails, fixing hair, and settling in to watch a movie complete with popcorn.  It doesn’t have to be a special occasion to make arrangements to help the staff and Villagers prepare a meal using freshly harvested produce and herbs from The Village Garden.  Then, sit down and enjoy dining and lively conversation with the residents and caregivers.  We welcome all of your fun and creative ideas for volunteering your time creating special memories with our Villagers at Village at Stoney Glen.  We have 16 residents who take pleasure in showing off their beautiful home and spending time with visitors!

Development

The Development Department at Village Learning & Achievement Center is busy all year long planning fund-raising events, coordinating community outreach programs, and planning for our future growth.  We need volunteers to assist with data entry, filing and other office tasks.  Opportunities also exist for visiting with friends while gathered around the table to stuff, stamp and label large mail out projects.  If you have event planning expertise, we’d appreciate your assistance with our annual charity gala and our annual golf tournament.  We also need lots of help soliciting and organizing silent auction and raffle items for both events.  Of course, the day before and the day of these events we rely on many volunteers to make these occasions as successful as possible.  We gratefully appreciate any assistance you can offer!
