Village Learning & Achievement Center

Volunteer Opportunities Descriptions

There are countless ways to support the Village Learning & Achievement Center through volunteer opportunities.  We would love for you or your organization to join us as we seek to make a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities.  Please note that there is an application process required for on-site volunteers.

Classroom Helper

A classroom helper works in any of our classrooms assisting with anything from reading, math, hand over hand learning, to playing bingo and other games to all our job sites in the Center.  We also need folks to go on our outings as an extra pair of eyes and ears!  Everyone in the classroom is supervised and supported by a staff member and is not expected to teach the class.  It is great to have people from the community in the classrooms because it makes the circle of friends the Villagers have that much bigger and more meaningful!  The Center is open Monday through Friday from 6:45 am to 5:30 pm.  Drop-in is possible and welcome.  If you have signed up for a time and you can’t make it just call and let us know.  281-358-6172, we are located at 3819 Plum Valley Drive, behind the Firestone and McDonalds on Northpark.

Organic Gardening

We need help keeping the garden growing!  Our new organic garden is a great place to help the Villagers on one of their job sites.  We have written job descriptions for the organic garden and are looking forward to getting out in the garden and learning some great skills!  Volunteers who are interested in assisting Ms. Parks with her job site should sign up to help in the organic garden! Monday – Friday 3:15 pm -4:15pm.

Auxiliary

We are looking for volunteers to work with Ms. Harney on Thursdays from 10 am to 2 pm to create fun and exciting things to sell to help in our fundraising activities at the Center.  Ms. Harney is creating packaging for the candy we sell year round for all the different holidays and special occasions.  In addition she is creating different projects to do that will be sold in our front office and eventually in our resale shop.  If you love crafts, this is the spot for you!

Ceramics

Ms. Jennifer needs volunteers for her classroom!   We are conducting time studies on the ceramics that the Villagers are making.  Some help is needed in the script writing on the back of the different pieces that we produce.  Use your creative side and help paint some beautiful pieces of ceramics for sale in the front on line and eventually in our resale shop.  Monday through Friday 10 am – 2 pm.

Cooking to Learn

Ms. Parks is teaching cooking classes Monday through Thursday.  There are two classes per day beginning at 9:30 and ending at 11:30.  She needs assistants in her classroom to help with the set up and clean up of the class as well as some support for the Villagers.  If you love to cook and share your love of cooking with others this is the class for you!  Volunteer from 9-12.

Stoney Glen

Ms. Mary Holt loves extra help at Stoney Glen on the weekends!  From playing board games, card games and Wii to creating girls night with painting finger nails and watching movies with popcorn!  We welcome all fun and creative ideas for coming to visit our home.  If you can imagine it then we can make it a fun day or night!  There are 14 residents and we have a spot for two extra visitors!  They love company and to show off their home!  Please consider spending time with the guys at Stoney Glen!  Mary also loves healthy meals brought over!  Please call 713-628-3361 and speak with Mary about what you can do at Stoney Glen!

Development

Come help the Development Department on Thursdays from 10 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  Our Development Department always has a lot to do!  They do all our fundraising and volunteer coordinating!  They need lots of help!  We appreciate any assistance you can give!
